La Prairie
Heritage gem founded in 1667
Living in
La Prairie
Founded in 1667, the same year as Boucherville, La Prairie is one of Quebec's oldest municipalities. The seigneury of La Prairie-de-la-Madeleine was a strategic outpost of New France, and Old La Prairie preserves some of the Montérégie's best-kept 18th century buildings.
The Old Quarter, with its pedestrian streets, ancestral stone houses, and art galleries, offers a unique ambiance on the South Shore. The city is also the birthplace of Canada's first railway — the Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad, inaugurated in 1836, linked La Prairie to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Today, the city offers a diverse range of properties, from heritage homes to new construction. Its central South Shore location and proximity to the Samuel De Champlain Bridge and the REM make it a prime location.
